Thursday’s Special: Traces of the Past

This large medieval tithe barn is situated at Ashleworth in Gloucestershire. The barn was built about between 1481 and 1515 by the canons of St Augustine’s, Bristol and used to store foodstuffs given to the church. At that time the manor  of Ashleworth was in possession of Bristol Abbey. Currently undergoing restoration by the National Trust.

Directly behind the barn is the parish church, St Andrews, with Saxon stonework and one of the earliest known examples of a royal coat of arms. Together with Ashleworth Court (privately owned) these buildings have existed together in a very attractive location close to the River Severn.

Heyjude

I have lived in the UK for most of my life, but when young I definitely had wanderlust and even ended up living in South Africa for several years which was a wonderful experience. I now look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. That’s cold, but healthy weather. I love the photos, Jude, especially the mood in your second shot. Very nice.

    1. Thank you Paula. Yes the cold does kill off a lot of bugs and pests, these mild, wet winters simply help them multiply! I don’t dislike cold weather as long as it is dry!

    1. An unusual event that winter. Snow lay all over the south of England and for once it was very pretty. (Usually goes grey and slushy very quickly). We had booked a holiday cottage for Christmas and were beginning to wonder whether we’d be able to reach it!

    1. We don’t often get this sort of winter so it was quite beautiful to see the landscape covered in pristine whiteness 🙂

    1. The entire country had snow that winter (2010). Fortunately the main roads had been cleared before we had to drive to the cottage, but minor roads were a bit trickier. And yes, we do have snow ploughs and gritting lorries 😀

  2. I’ve felt -5° (in the High Atlas Mountains) and was preparing for my last rites thinking the end was near, so well done for braving the elements to get these shots 🙂
