Thursday Special

Paula’s (Lost in Translation) challenge this week is slightly different than usual in that she has provided a list of words from which to pick one to illustrate.

I am going for decrepit: adjective meaning  – worn out or ruined because of age or neglect; dilapidated; rickety; run-down; broken-down; ramshackle; worn-out; derelict; falling to pieces; on its last legs

I like photographing old and decrepit things and on a trip around the Canyons a few years ago we came across this abandoned ‘village’ near Marble Canyon, AZ. During the Great Depression, a few white settlers built a small town of wooden structures with shingle roofs that still cling to gigantic boulders in a moon-like setting at the foot of Vermilion Cliffs. They were known as the Cliff Dwellers.

How anyone survived in this desolate landscape I have no idea.

Please pop over to see Paula if you would like to join in.

Heyjude

I now live back in the UK, but spent several years travelling the world and then living in South Africa. I look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. Mu guess is the framing for the doorway and the window are some sort of metal, still can’t believe it holds up the weight of the rock. Love the red and the interesting ‘houses.’ 😀 😀 😛

    1. I think they were wooden, but can’t be entirely sure. It must have been so hot living there, though the Colorado river is close by so maybe they had some kind of irrigation system in place.

  2. Great photos for this challenge, Jude. I love decrepit things, especially those that either nature has overtaken or that are falling back into nature. Have a good weekend! 🙂

    1. Oh, yes Cathy. I have a zillion photos that fit this word! Have a good weekend yourself – how’s the renovation coming on? Any sign of a kitchen yet?

      1. The kitchen is coming along, Jude. As of last weekend, the laundry room was done, and we had fun doing laundry all weekend! Haha. This weekend, the screened porch will be done and our furniture will be delivered on Friday. Kitchen countertops are coming tomorrow and then it will take 3 days to finish the wood floors. Electrician and plumber coming next week and appliances should be installed. Finally, the painter will be here on the 29-30. I can’t wait! 🙂

        1. I look forward to seeing the results, sounds lovely! We are still waiting for someone to come back and give us a proper estimate for the work we want doing, but builders here seem to be SO busy!

  3. Perfect choice for the word, Jude. I love the framed rock in the last shot.
I am also wondering just how they managed to live there.
    Regards as always, Pete. x

  4. I think you have definitely captured the theme! Hard to imagine living in such a place. The red rock is such a vibrant backdrop but certainly doesn’t outweigh the desolation.

    1. they went home yesterday so we are just about back to normal 🙂 They did an awful lot of work in the garden for us so we are (or I am – the OH is not a gardener) very grateful. Next lot due in a couple of weeks…

  5. I have never seen a boulder amazing as these. What a pleasant surprise, Jude! I am very grateful for this virtual travel to a place I am not likely to see in real life. Thank you for joining this challenge 🙂
