We’re gonna go on a bear hunt

On Sunday we went into Tofino for a look around the wharf and town (how can you resist a peek into Mermaid Tales bookshop?) and ended up in Sea Shanty at the corner of 1st and Main and close to the Government Dock for a cup of hot chocolate and a shared piece of pecan pie – oh lord I need to stop travelling as I eat far too much when away from home!

The afternoon saw us take a boat trip out into Tofino Inlet with Jamie’s on a Bear Watch. I wasn’t expecting a lot, I mean wild animals are not guaranteed on these trips, but it was a lovely relaxing way to spend an afternoon anyway and the scenery is spectacular.

We did in fact see two bear families and close enough to get some reasonable photographs though I really do need to invest in a DSLR or something with a long zoom lens! Also saw some harbour seals which are apparently referred to by the locals as “orca’s hotdogs”.

Dinner back at Sea Shanty was fish (halibut) and chips for OH whilst I had “planked” salmon (basically wild salmon served on a wooden plank) served with roast potatoes, carrots, broccoli and a blueberry compote which was so great that I have cooked this at home since. Chose a BC Shiraz tonight and although we really shouldn’t have, who can resist Irish Cream Cheesecake? Shared naturally, otherwise it would be greedy!

Heyjude

I now live back in the UK, but spent several years travelling the world and then living in South Africa. I look forward to a long and leisurely retirement doing what I like most - gardening, photography, walking and travelling.

  1. Nice photos. Loved the seal on the rock! That Pecan Pie is making my mouth water too. The baby bear looks cute, so it must have been a great experience to see them, even at that distance. Regards from Norfolk as always. (Not so hot today Jude!) Pete.

    1. Thanks Pete. It was amazing to see the mothers with their youngsters prowling the shoreline for food. Although I didn’t get great close-up shots, nothing can take away the memories. Actually sometimes I think people are so busy snapping away that they forget to just stop and look and listen and take it all in.
      xx
